To salute the talented and skilled weavers of India and also to promote handmade and handwoven garments and other products, August 7 is celebrated as the 'National Handloom Day' since 2015 when Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the day at the Centenary Hall of Madras University in Chennai. Here's more about this day and its relevance. Why was August 7 chosen as National Handloom Day? To commemorate the Swadeshi Movement of India's freedom struggle, August 7 was chosen as the National Handloom Day. The Swadeshi Movement was launched on August 7, 1905, in the Calcutta Town hall to protest against the partition of Bengal by the British Government. The objective of the movement was also to revive domestic market and its many products. To honour thousands of handloom weavers in the country and also highlight India’s handloom industry, designer Gautam Gupta of the label Asha Gautam has come up with a campaign 'Special Ode to Handloom' where in a series of activities the culture of handloom was celebrated the entire week at their store in GK 1, New Delhi. The brand is known for its beautiful paithani saris made with the help of gifted weavers. Asha Gautam endeavours to uplift the handloom weaving sector of India and help make its mark in the world. It is also helping the weavers evolve by making them experiment with their craft in interesting ways to create unique garments.
